8th grade registration tomorrow! We need people to staff our table at 8th grade registration tomorrow starting at 6:00. This usually invokves hanging upside down from the walls of the gym and Mr. Long buys pizza for dinner.
Comp in Ft. Collins 12/12Is anybody interested in competing in Ft. Collins on Dec. 12?
When: Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm Where: Inner Strength Climbing Gym 3713 S. Mason Street Fort Collins, CO 80525 If there is a group that wants to go, we could work out a carpool arrangement. Let me know. Need Help 11/6Lara has offered us the chance to sell food during the gym's Ice Night on Friday the 6th. It would be great to have a few of us there to help out (helpers could also try some climbing with the ice tools). Any money we raise would go towards competition entry fees and a possible ice climbing outing this winter. Let me know if you can help.
Free Climbing this weekendThe Rock is having its annual free climbing weekend this Saturday and Sunday from 12-8. It's a great time to get in some climbing and/or introduce a friend to the sport. The gym is also selling annual memberships at a discount this weekend.
I plan to climb for a bit on Sunday afternoon if anyone would like to join me; I expect I'll be there around 3. First Competition October 3rdThe first competition of the year is coming up fast. Please notify Mr. Long if you plan to compete for the school. We can have 5 guys and 5 girls in each comp. If we have more than that interested, there will be a climb off to see who goes varsity and who goes JV. The top 3 scores for males and female climbers give us our team score. Don't worry if you're a beginner; there are easy climbs available in the comps. and your acore can still help the team.
Competition Schedule PostedI've posted the schedule of competitions in the "files" section. There is a new format for this year; these are the details from Lara:
SoCo comp format:
Local gyms host 4-5 competitions from Oct - Feb. Each competition has top rope, lead climbing, and bouldering. Climbers have three hours to complete as many climbs and problems as they can. They're scored on their top five. Bonuses are given for flashing and leading and falls are used to break ties. Top three scores for each gender and each school are assembled into a conglomerate team score. In the past, we used beginner, intermediate, and advanced scores and took the top one from each category in order to encourage new climbers. Now we're switching to JV/Varsity format so we can accomplish the same thing but be closer to what other high school sports do.
SoCo team/individual selection:
We keep track of individual and team scores at each competition. We take the top three scores for each team (by gender) or each individual and add them together for a seasonal score. We invite the top 3 teams for each gender and the top male/female individual to State. If the individual is from a school that already has an invitation, we give that school an extra slot for their team. Club Starts 8/19!The first meeting for the Rock Climbing Club is at 3:30 on Wednesday August 19 at The Rock in the Colorado Sport Center (formerly Soc 'n Roll). Cost is $8 for admission and $4 for shoe rental. Be sure to bring a signed waiver (below).
